Painting your home is an inexpensive way to update your living spaces. A fresh coat of paint makes a room look brighter and newer. Paint an entire room or just an accent wall to add personality. Here are a few tips to help you paint like a pro.

Gather Your Supplies

You will need quality supplies for the best results. Purchase high-end paint and the best brushes and rollers. If you’re uncertain how much or what type of paint you’ll need, talk to the paint specialist at your local home improvement store. They can calculate how many gallons your project will require and recommend the right finish.

Prepare the Wall

Before you begin painting, use a cleaner to wipe down the walls. You will remove any dust and dirt, preventing it from being trapped under the paint. If you’re painting the kitchen, it’s best to use a degreasing cleaner before painting.

Use a spackling compound to fill holes or cracks in the wall, then sand it smooth. Remove any outlet covers and light switch cover plates. It’s easier to remove them than to try to tape or paint around them.

Use a Drop Cloth to Paint Like a Pro

Move all the furniture out of the room, or if that’s not an option, slide it to the center of the space. Place canvas drop cloths on the ground beneath where you’ll be working. Canvas is a better choice than plastic because it absorbs paint and protects the floor below. Also, canvas cloths are not as slippery as plastic tarps. You can also use a drop cloth to cover any furniture remaining in the room.

Primer

A good quality primer helps the paint adhere to the wall and allows for bolder color. Use a white primer beneath lighter colors and a gray primer before painting the room in a darker color.

Painting the Walls

Don’t rush through painting a wall. Use a small brush to paint around the trim and edges. Then use a paint roller to cover the walls, moving it in a “W” shape to eliminate any roller marks. Allow the paint to dry completely before applying a second coat.
